Thumping victory in QF over England put Sri Lanka in semis

It was one of the days which Sri Lankan cricket lovers will never forget as their team made it to the semi-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 with dominating performance. Lankan giants dominated Englishmen completely on the field and achieved easy victory which gave them much required momentum needed for semi-finals and finals. Sri Lanka will play New Zealand in semi-finals and Kiwis failed to win the match in Sri Lanka since 2003, so semis will again become easy transit for the finals as far as Lankans are concerned.

Sri Lanka did make few mistake in the field where they dropped as many as four catches of Eoin Morgan. This was  the only flaw in their performance in that game against England. Dropped catches helped England reaching partly competitive total of 229 and cricket lovers thought that this total will be enough looking at the condition of the pitch in the second innings. Moreover, other night collapse of South African batting against New Zealand confirmed that chase will not going to be easy for the Lankans. But Dilshan and Tharanga had other ideas and both these openers stamped their authority on the match by playing freely and both scored centuries which helped Lanka winning this match by 10 wickets. This clearly showed that how comfortable Sri Lanka is in their home conditions. South Africa lost the match by 49 runs while chasing New Zealand score of 221 shows the difference between the two teams and their adaptability to the pitches and conditions.

As far as England is concerned, they made it to the quarter-finals after topsy-turvy performance in the league round and everybody expected that if England is in   quarter-finals after up-down in the league stage then this time something is waiting for them but quarter-finals turned out to be a sorry state of affairs for the England. They came into the World Cup with lot of cricket behind them, so the fatigue factor also played its role in their performance. The looked tired and didn't put fight-back. They got the golden chances from Lankans yet they couldn't capitalise on those chances and got out for the  par total. Once Dilshan and Tharanga started attacking, English bowlers looked completely out of sorts and it looked like they lost all the hopes of winning the game. They were monotonous on the field and didn't look energetic enough to convert even the half-chances. English batting also failed to dominate,  they started defensively against the part-time spinner like Dilshan. There was no intent in their batting in the beginning and they also lost wickets quite quickly and also to the part-timer. Trott played well for his 80 odd but he consumed too many balls. Only Morgan showed some intent but he was also lucky because he was dropped four times by the Lankans. Such poor performance was not expected from the team which defeated Australia just two months back. I think England have to do lot of soul searching about their performance in this World Cup.

As far as Lankan bowling is concern, Muralitharan once again showed his class. He was struggling with hamstring injury, yet he bowled like a champion, no wonder why he is so precious to the Sri Lankan cricket. Malinga, Mendis, Mathews and Herath bowled brilliantly and given red alert to the Kiwis.

Cricket is a game of Glorious uncertainties, World Cup of unexpected results

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 started with glittering ceremony in Dhaka on 17th February and games started from 19th February since then lot of games played but most of them were boring especially matches involving minnows but this World Cup also provided us lot of excitement in terms of unexpected results of many games. Now we are heading towards business end of the tournament but  Group B is still open and who will make it to the Quarter-FInals  is depending on lot of permutations. But here are the few matches which lived upto the expectations of the people but results were unexpected.

It all started with Group B match between India and England where India were considered favourites to win the game and after scoring 338 nobody expected of loss or a tie but   match turned into hard fought contest and ended in a tie against everybody's expectations.

The next match which turned out very exciting and given unexpected result was the match between England and Ireland where everybody expected England to win and after scoring more than 300 runs England were firm favourites to win that contest but 'cometh the hour, cometh the man'. Kevin O'Brien of Ireland washed all the hopes of England won the game for his country single-handedly.

Next match comes to the mind was the match between England and South Africa. Everybody expected South Africa to win this contest and it also confirmed by the lunch time that South Africa win this game after restricting England to 170 odd runs but South Africa choked under pressure and lost this game against everybody's expectations.

Another match which resulted into unexpected outcome was the match between England and Bangladesh. England were favourites to win this contest and Bangladesh fought hard and won this game leaving England in situation where they are on the doorstep of exit from the tournament.

In all the above four matches Team England is the common factor and their situation is in complete jeopardy and now they have to win against West Indies at any cost and that too with big margin and they also have to depend on result of other team's matches  in order to qualify for the Quarter-Finals

The match between Bangladesh and West Indies also saw unexpected result. Looking at the current ICC ranking West Indies is below Bangladesh and everybody considered Bangladesh favourites to win the contest but against all expectations West Indies won this match convincingly leaving Bangladesh in complete disarray.

Match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan also yielded unexpected result. Before the start of tournament Sri Lanka were one of the strongest contenders to win the title and Pakistan were underdogs but the match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka turned all equations wrong. Pakistan won this game against everybody's expectations.

New Zealand were considered weakest team among all the test playing nations before the start of tournament and their drubbing at the hands of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan prior to the World Cup confirmed that but to everybody's surprise Kiwis lifted their game in the match against Pakistan and defeated them. The team which won all its 3 games in World Cup before this match lost to Kiwis thanks to the dropped catches.

So cricket is a game of great uncertainties and in this World Cup it proved once again. Expecting some more unexpected results from the remaining matches.

MAN TO WATCH

J.Trott

Jonathon Trott is the man for England in this  edition of the World Cup. He was highest scorer from from England in recently concluded ODI series against Australia. Off-late he is tremendous form and consistently performing well in all formats of the game. He scored two brilliant centuries against Australia in recently concluded ODI series. He is the most talented and reliable player  in English line-up. He is averaging over 53 in ODIs which is commendable achievement in shorter version. His heroics however shadowed because of his team mates like Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Strauss but he is highly rated by cricket experts. His role in this World Cup would be of anchor around whom entire English batting revolves. He is batting on key position of No.3 for England. He will be responsible for holding one end and help England to post big totals or chase down any totals posted by opposition teams. He is also medium pace bowler and bowls regularly and  has the ability to break partnerships.  England is depending highly on this man to help them in winning their first World Cup.
Career-best performance:
Batting: 137 v/s Australia at  Sydney  in 2011
Bowling: 31-2  v/s Australia at Adelaide in 2011
Three time finalist in World Cup but failed to win even once tell the complete story of English cricket. It is big irony country which gave birth to the game of cricket failed thrice to win the elite trophy even after reaching finals. I believe they are even big chokers then South Africa. Howver there are chances are also equally good in this edition of the World Cup if they will play at their full potential. They will be under-pressure going into World Cup because of their humiliating defeat against Australia in recently concluded ODI series where they lost the series 1-6 to Australia. But they can take the solace from their Ashes victory and get inspired to do well. Apart from performance they are having high casualty list which can harm their chances of winning World Cup. 7 players out of the World Cup squad of 15 are injured. Casualty list includes James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan, Paul Collingwood, Greame Swann, Ajmal Shahjad and Eoin Morgan. Eoin Morgan is already replace by Ravi Bopara and I believe Morgan will be missed badly by England because of his role as finisher in the side. England is hoping that all its injured players will be fit in time. If all these players don’t recover from their injuries then England will be in real trouble and this rob their chance of winning World Cup.  England have big chance of winning this World Cup provided they find eleven fit players. Remember, they are T20 World Cup champions and this clearly suggest their potential of winning the World Cup.

Key Players for England  Andrew Strauss, Jonathon Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Greame Swann and James Anderson.
